L'Assomption is a historic city in the Lanaudière region, seat of the MRC de L'Assomption, with a population of 23,442 as of the 2021 census. Located approximately 50 km northeast of Montreal, accessible via Highway 40 (exit 108), the city is established on a meander of the L'Assomption River, a former portage trail used by First Nations and coureurs des bois. L'Assomption is part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal.

L'Assomption possesses one of the richest architectural heritage sites in Lanaudière. The Collège de L'Assomption, founded in 1832, is a classified heritage site whose dome is an iconic landmark of the historic village core. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada's seventh prime minister, studied there. The Maison de la Culture, a former convent built in 1889 in Second Empire style, and the L'Assomption-de-la-Sainte-Vierge presbytery, dating from 1897, complete this remarkable built heritage. The Vieux Palais de Justice de L'Assomption is the oldest circuit courthouse in Quebec.

The municipal territory includes three distinct areas: the village of L'Assomption, established within the river's historic meander, the Méandre de L'Assomption, and the village of Saint-Gérard-Majella, amalgamated in 2000. The Champboisé neighborhood, developing since the 1980s, is a growing family-oriented residential area. The city features a mix of heritage properties in the old village, single-family homes in residential neighborhoods, and newer construction in developing areas.

Between 1774 and 1888, L'Assomption was the most prosperous and important town between Montreal and Trois-Rivières. Today, the city maintains a vibrant cultural life with the Théâtre Hector-Charland, the Boîte à chansons de L'Assomption, the Bistro l'Ange Cornu, and the Oasis du Vieux Palais. A heritage walking circuit allows visitors to discover local history on foot. The Christian-Roy library serves residents with two branches.

In terms of services, the city offers its residents several sports facilities including soccer and baseball fields, indoor and outdoor pools, an arena, a sports complex, and numerous neighborhood parks. L'Assomption is also home to the Cégep régional de Lanaudière à L'Assomption and several elementary and secondary schools. The L'Assomption River provides opportunities for boating, fishing, and access to waterfront hiking trails.
